History of Fort Monroe Tour

    • Description: Start your journey through history with the stories and experiences of the Kikotan tribe, and of the first Africans brought to Virginia. Continue into the largest stone fort in North America to learn about the unique structure of the fort, the changes of the use of the fort over time, and the people who created lasting legacies at Fort Monroe. 

    • Activity Level: Low, walk and stop at various exhibits, some outdoor walking, places to sit in the Visitor Center and Casemate Museum

    • Cost: $5 per person

 

Road to Freedom

    • Description:  Join us at Freedom’s Fortress to experience history where it happened. Guests will walk in the steps of those whose actions resulted in the 1861 contraband decision, and hear how freedom seekers, despite peril to themselves and families, began the nation’s movement towards emancipation. Hear about the many roadblocks and obstacles they faced along the path, and how their courage and resiliency gave hope to so many others on the Road to Freedom.

    • Activity Level: Medium, walk and stop at various buildings and sites, mostly outside on paved pathways, places to sit in the Visitor Center and Casemate Museum

    • Cost: $5 per person

Mission: Fort Monroe

    • Description: Be on the front lines as you discover 200 years of military history while walking the seawall. Traverse the fort from a unique vantage point and explore the impact of Fort Monroe on military training, logistics and beyond. 

    • Activity Level: Medium, walk and stop at various sites, mostly outside on paved pathways, places to sit outside Visitor Center

    • Cost: $5 per person

Uncovering the Secrets of Fort Monroe

    • Description: Unlock special behind the scenes areas within Fort Monroe on this tour. Explore various important buildings and structures and learn about their historical significance in the story of Fort Monroe.

    • Activity Level: Medium,  walk and stop at various buildings and sites,  mostly outside, some paved pathways, some areas of uneven ground, places to sit in the Visitor Center

    • Cost: $10 per person

From Tragedy To Trinity

  • Description: Churches on military bases have played a critical role in supporting the spiritual, emotional, and social well-being of service members and their families. Explore inside The Chapel of the Centurion, one of the oldest wood structures continually used for religous services by the United States  Army. Learn its rich history and be inspired by 24 beautiful stain glass windows memorializing the lives, accomplishments and sacrifices made by soldiers and those close to their heart. 

  • Activity Level: Low, 10-minute walk from Visitor Center to Chapel, mostly paved, all outdoors, seating inside of Chapel
