The Art of Artifacts

Some Things Never Get Old

The Art of Artifacts

The Fort Monroe Authority has over 1,500 artifacts in its permanent collection. It is a varied collection of tourist keepsakes and antiques, military uniforms and heraldry, as well as archaeological relics dating back as early as 1605. The artifacts on display will rotate often and have been selected by staff from their interests and curiosities.

The art of artifacts is their ability to tell unique and remarkable stories in an unconventional way. While the date of creation for many of our artifacts are old from a timeline perspective, the impact of their stories shaped Tsenacommacah, Point Comfort, Old Point Comfort and Fort Monroe into what it is today.

We aim to make the old new again by giving the artifacts space within our gallery. Displaying in a modern way allows the guest to engage based on interests in order to learn more not about the artifacts but the stories they have to share. In doing so, the artifacts will bring up relevant topics from history that are still applicable today.
