Fort Monroe

forward

A once-in-a-generation effort to shape the future of Fort Monroe’s landscape.
From its waterfront to its open spaces, Fort Monroe is a place where history, community, and everyday life meet.
Now, we’re planning for what comes next.

Why this Matters

Fort Monroe is growing—but it wasn’t designed for today’s level of use.

Visitors come for the beach, to walk and bike, to gather with friends, and to connect with history. As use continues to grow, so does the need to thoughtfully invest in the landscape itself.

The Landscape Action Plan will guide how Fort Monroe evolves over the next 25–50 years—improving comfort, access, and experience while preserving what makes this place meaningful.  The Landscape Action Plan is being led by the Fort Monroe Authority in collaboration with design and public engagement partners, including Hargreaves Jones.

Fort Monroe is a place where history, landscape, and people come together.

Now, we are shaping its future—thoughtfully and over time.

Through this effort, we are looking at how Fort Monroe can better serve the community today while preparing for the generations who will experience it tomorrow.
