NATIONAL PARK SERVICE SUPERINTENDENT DISCUSSES FORT MONROE PLANS

May 23, 2012

Dear Neighbors:

I am excited to announce the inaugural Fort Monroe National Monument planning effort following its addition to the national park system by presidential proclamation last November. As you know, Old Point Comfort has a long and rich history. The Peninsula is also home to diverse natural resources, including ancient trees and beaches, and a variety of recreational opportunities.

This spring the National Park Service began work on its Foundation Document as part of the comprehensive planning effort with the Fort Monroe Authority and the City of Hampton. This planning phase will help further identify what are the fundamental resources of the monument. Your voice is important. Please visit the park website (www.nps.gov/fomr) and click on the link to find out more about how to participate. On the park website you can also learn about public programs.

I appreciate your continued interest in Fort Monroe and look forward to working with you as we chart its future.

Kirsten Talken-Spaulding,

Superintendent
