Plan Your Visit
Fort Monroe is a wonderful place to visit. If you are a history buff, nature lover or simply looking for a good meal, a day at Fort Monroe is unlike any other.
Start your visit at the Fort Monroe Visitor & Education Center and hear the stories of Shepard Mallory, Frank Baker, and James Townsend—three enslaved men who sought freedom at Union-held Fort Monroe. There will be living history interpretations, cooking demonstrations, self-guided walking tours throughout the day—all sharing stories of the many freedom seekers who sought refuge here at Freedom’s Fortress. Community organizations and several local historic sites and museums will also be at Fort Monroe on Saturday including the Contraband Historical Society, Casemate Museum, Hampton History Museum, Mariners Museum, Jamestown/Yorktown Foundation, Hampton University Museum, and Fort Monroe National Monument. Admission is free.
