In 2011, the Fort Monroe Foundation was created by the Fort Monroe Authority to serve as the philanthropic entity to solicit and administrate donations to preserve the property at Fort Monroe and tell the great history of this property. At the request of the Governor of Virginia, the United States Secretary of the Interior committed to explore the feasibility of entering into a partnership agreement with the Fort Monroe Foundation to encourage private philanthropy and projects to benefit the preservation and interpretation of resources within the park. In public meetings U.S. Senator Mark Warner has expressed that Fort Monroe may be the most significant site in our country for African Americans. In 1960 the Secretary of the Interior identified the property at Fort Monroe as a National Historic Landmark; a significantly rare designation at that time. On November 1, 2011 President Barrack Obama designated approximately 50% of the open space at Fort Monroe as a National Historic Landmark. Since its humble beginnings the Fort Monroe Foundation has provided the financial support for special events and public spaces at Fort Monroe that allow tens of thousands of visitors to enjoy free military concerts, symphonic performances, and special exhibits in the Casemate Museum.

The Casemate Museum relies upon the Fort Monroe Foundation to provide grants for the addition of new exhibits and other special projects at the museum. Visits to the Casemate Museum are free.

Fort Monroe is truly one of our nation’s great treasures. With your generous gift, you can continue to honor the legacy of this special place. The Fort Monroe Foundation is dedicated to preserving the historic and natural resources at Fort Monroe and to organizing and promoting programs for the general public that maximize their access, enjoyment, and educational enrichment. Your support is great appreciated.

A fun way to help support the Foundation is to sponsor a flag to fly over Fort Monroe. For almost 200 years, the Army flew a flag on the Fort’s flag bastion. Celebrate the history of Fort Monroe and show your American pride by helping to continue this long-standing tradition.

You can help keep the flag flying with a donation of $300 or more. In recognition of your contribution, you will be notified in writing when your flag will fly over Fort Monroe. Once your flag has been worn or faded, it will be retired and mailed to you with an official letter recognizing the time it flew over Freedom’s Fortress.
