Plan Your Visit
Fort Monroe is a wonderful place to visit. If you are a history buff, nature lover or simply looking for a good meal, a day at Fort Monroe is unlike any other.
Join us on July 16 for an engaging Community Conversation with Kathleen Thompson from the Fleet and Family Support Center.
Come and take a deep dive into the lives of those who struggled with mental illness on Fort Monroe in the mid to late 19th century during their time on the Fort, in our new temporary exhibit Beyond the Battlefield: Redefining Trauma. Then on July 16, from 1-2PM, at the Fort Monroe Visitor and Education Center, come participate in our community conversation about Mind Body Wellness hosted by Kathleen Thompson from Newport News Fleet and Family Support Center.
In this conversation, Kathleen will be leading us through the importance of mindfulness in our lives and the impact it has physically and mentally. “Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present and aware of one’s own thoughts, feelings, and physical states. At its most basic level, mindfulness is about intentionally paying attention to your present moment experiences, without getting caught up in judgements or distractions. It helps you to notice stressful situations and their impacts much faster and to choose a response wisely to recover much faster. Practicing medication can help you increase mindfulness.”
We hope to see you at Fort Monroe as we work to support those working in the mental health field in the Hampton Roads.
