Plan Your Visit
Fort Monroe is a wonderful place to visit. If you are a history buff, nature lover or simply looking for a good meal, a day at Fort Monroe is unlike any other.
Join us for the 2nd Fort Talkers as our archivist shares the history and cultural importance of the Old Point Comfort Lighthouse!
On August 07, 2022 from 1PM – 2PM join us in person at the Fort Monroe Visitor & Education Center or virtually to learn about the deep history of this historic structure.
Our archivist will be hosting a conversation with the public regarding the history of the Old Point Comfort lighthouse and its significance as a symbol of opportunity and social mobility for women and Black men during the 19th century.
The conversation will highlight one manner in which Freedom’s Fortress offered sustainability to an often-silenced segment of the population while also grappling with examples of prejudice evident in the pre and postbellum United States as exemplified by the lighthouse keepers and their legacies.
The program will take place at the Fort Monroe Visitor and Education Center and streamed online through Facebook Live.
