SUMMARY:Special Event: National Park Service--Campfire Talk Series: Women’s Army Corps at Fort Monroe
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin us to learn about the work done by the Women’s Army Corps as Fort Monroe’s mission shifted from the Army Ground Forces to the US Army Training and Doctrine Command. As the home of the Coast Artillery\, Fort Monroe’s early mission revolved around the Combat Arms. The Women’s Army Corps (WAC)\, created in 1942 in order to fill administrative\, support positions\, and “free a man to fight\,” was consequently one of the later posts to receive a unit of WACs; however\, after their arrival they played a continuous role until the WAC Company was deactivated in 1974. \nColonies RV & Travel Park – Shelter #3\n501 Fenwick Road\nFort Monroe\, VA 23651

SUMMARY:Special Event: National Park Service Campfire Talks: Crafting the Past: Fort Monroe’s Indigenous History Through Pottery & Regalia
DESCRIPTION:Fort Monroe\, once a Union Army stronghold\, has a much older history that predates the American Civil War. In 1607\, English explorers named the land Point Comfort—but its first inhabitants were not English. Who were these people? Join Ranger Ashley Ranalli from Captain John Smith National Historic Trail\, along with her colleague Kalen Anderson\, of the Nansemond Indian Tribe\, to learn about the Native Americans who once occupied Point Comfort.\n\nThis Campfire Talk is a special hands-on experience. Rangers will provide information about local historic indigenous culture through the medium of traditional Indian crafts. Visitors will have the option of making pottery\, as well as learning a little about the changing nature of Native American regalia. Come join us and take a piece of history home with you!
