SUMMARY:Special Event: African Landing Day
DESCRIPTION:The Landing of the First Africans to English North America \nThe first Africans\, kidnapped and brought to English North America\, came from the kingdoms of Kongo\, and Ndongo and Matamba\, the two largest states in central Africa ruled by an elected King chosen from a line of royal lineages. The highly advanced societies were invaded by the Portuguese in the late 1400s who in the ensuing decades meddled in the affairs of the African continent and eventually set in motion the trans-Atlantic slave trade. \nIn 1619 the São João Bautista sailed from the Port of Luanda\, Angola laden with over 350 enslaved Africans bound for Vera Cruz in the colony of New Spain. The horrors of the middle passage across the Atlantic are unimaginable. As the slave ship transited the Bay of Campeche\, two English privateer ships\, the White Lion and Treasurer attacked the São João Bautista and seized 60 Africans. The privateers\, looking for refuge and supplies\, sailed north until reaching Point Comfort in August 1619. The enslaved Africans were brought ashore and traded for supplies after which they were sold to colonists throughout the area. \nThis historical event changed the course of the history from the early years of the Virginia colony\, to the founding of America and into the future. The perseverance\, resiliency and courage of the men and women who landed at Point Comfort ensured the survival of the nascent colony and enriched those who exploited them \nSlavery in the English colonies began with this happen chance as did the collision of three cultures: Indigenous\, African and European. Oftentimes violence and destruction were the result of the encounter\, but so is the fusion of practices that are seen in many aspects of American culture\, such as the preparation of foods\, music\, language and oral traditions. \nSchedule of Events at the site of the future African Landing Memorial and Continental Park from 10 am to 4 pm \nThis will be a participatory event by all attendees.  Guests are encouraged to dress comfortably and to wear walking shoes.  The event area is approximately .75 miles in length and guests will be walking to 3 different areas within the site.  Seating will be limited so please bring folding chairs or blankets and water bottles.   Guests are also encouraged to bring a small soil sample from their homeland or other special place of significance to their families to blend with the soil here at Point Comfort and soil from Angola. \nSoil Blending Ceremony begins at 10 am  All times listed are approximate. \n10 am to 10:45 am \nCultural Honors and Recognitions \nCultural Honors and Recognition to the Indigenous People by the Cheroenhaka (Nottaway Tribe of Southhampton\, Virginia) led by Chief Walter “Red Hawk” Brown. \nCultural Honors and Recognition of Angolan Traditions include West African dancing and drumming  and Libation Ceremony \nSignificance of Place–Prayer from Rev. SUMMARY:Special Event: First Enslaved African Landing in Virginia Commemoration
DESCRIPTION:The Landing of the First Enslaved Africans to English North America \nIn August 1619\, a privateering vessel flying the flag of the Dutch Republic arrived at Point Comfort (now known as Fort Monroe in present-day Hampton).  According to John Rolfe\, the ship held no cargo but “20 and odd” Africans\, who were traded to Governor George Yeardley and Cape Merchant  Abraham Peirsey in exchange for provisions.  These individuals\, originally captured by Portuguese slavers in West Central Africa (likely modern-day Angola)\, were the first recorded Africans to arrive in English North America. \nWhile the White Lion\, which carried the the first Africans to Virginia\, did fly a Dutch flag\, research has revealed that both the ship and its captain\, John Jope\, were English.  Jope held a letter of marque from Vlissingen\, a notorious privateer haven in the Netherlands\, which allowed him to legally plunder Spanish and Portuguese vessels.  He could not have done so under English authority\, as England and Spain were at peace in 1619.  While patrolling the Gulf of Mexico in late July or early August 1619\, Jope encountered the Treasurer\, another privateering vessel\, captained by Daniel Elfrith.  Sailing in consort with one another\, the White Lion and the Treasurer managed to capture a Portuguese slave trading vessel\, the Sao Joao Bautista (Saint John the Baptist)\, which was bound for Vera Cruz\, Mexico. \nJope and Elfrith soon discovered that the Sao Joao Bautista\, was carrying approximately 350 enslaved Africans.  It is likely that many of the enslaved Africans were skilled laborers from West Central Africa’s urban centers\, and many were likely Christians as well\, converted by the Portuguese before or after their capture.  After taking on as many captive Africans as their ships could carry\, Jope and Elfrith chose to sail north to the Virginia Colony. \nWe come together this weekend to recognize the landing of the first enslaved Africans on our shores here at Point Comfort–a point in our country’s history that had\, and continues to have\, a profound impact on this country and its people. \nSchedule of Events at Continental Park from 11 am to 4 pm \nParade of African Nations \nDrum Call-Libation:  Bring your own drum and participate in the Circle of Drums \nPerformance by Crimson Thunder Drumline from Katherine Johnson Elementary School in Newport News \nPrayer for Social Justice\, Reconciliation and Healing \nKeynote Address:  Award winning author\, educator\, and historian\, Ric Murphy.  His latest book is titled Arrival of the First Africans in Virginia\, 2020 Phillis Wheatley Book Award winner \nBell ringing ceremony for Healing\, Remembrance\, and Hope \nFlower Petal Ceremony to remember the lives lost through the Middle Passage \nVendors and food trucks will be onsite from 10 am to 4 pm.  Limited seating will be available.  Bring your own folding chair or lawn chair.  This event is weather permitting. \n  \nSpecial thanks to the Fort Monroe National Monument\, City of Hampton\, Hampton Convention & Visitors Bureau\,  Fort Monroe Authority\, and Project 1619\, Inc. for their support of this program.
