The day begins at 9 a.m. with the William Tucker 1624 Society’s annual ceremony of remembrance\, followed at 10:30 a.m. by the National Ceremony of Remembrance and Renewal and the unveiling of the newest sculpture at the African Landing Memorial. The sculpture honors Antony and Isabella and their son William\, among the first known African family in English North America and represents an important new chapter in telling this enduring American story.

DESCRIPTION:UPDATE:  THIS EVENT HAS BEEN MOVED TO THE HAMPTON ROADS CONVENTION CENTER BECAUSE OF THE EXPECTED INCLEMENT WEATHER \nThe Landing of the First Africans in English North America \nThe first Africans kidnapped and brought to English North America came from the kingdoms of Kongo and Ndongo and Matamba—two of the largest states in Central Africa\, governed by elected rulers from royal lineages. In the late 1400s\, Portuguese invasions disrupted these highly advanced societies\, setting in motion the trans-Atlantic slave trade. \n\nIn 1619\, the São João Batista departed Luanda\, Angola\, carrying more than 350 enslaved Africans bound for Vera Cruz in New Spain. The horrors of the Middle Passage across the Atlantic are unimaginable. As the ship crossed the Bay of Campeche\, two English privateers—the White Lion and the Treasurer—attacked\, seizing approximately 60 Africans. Seeking provisions\, they sailed north and arrived at Point Comfort in August 1619. There\, the Africans were brought ashore and traded to colonists throughout the region. \nThis moment altered the course of history—from the earliest years of the Virginia colony to the founding of America and beyond.   The resilience\, perseverance\, and courage of the men and women who landed at Point Comfort contributed to the survival of a fragile colony\, even as their lives and labor were exploited. \nFrom this beginning emerged both profound injustice and profound cultural transformation.  The encounter of Indigenous\, African\, and European peoples was often marked by violence and loss\, yet it also gave rise to enduring cultural traditions that continue to shape American life today—including foodways\, music\, language\, and oral traditions. \nDuring African Landing Commemoration Week\, we reflect on this history\, honor the lives and legacies of those who endured it\, and recognize the ways their contributions continue to shape our shared story. \n\n\nJoin Project 1619 at Fort Monroe on Saturday\, August 22\, 2026 from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm for the traditional Enslaved African Landing Day! \n\n\n\nAs the kickoff event of African Landing Commemoration Week\, Enslaved African Landing Day is the traditional and long-standing commemoration that recognizes the resilience and legacy of the first Africans brought against their will to Point Comfort in August of 1619. National recording artists Musiq Soulchild and Amerie will headline the afternoon entertainment. \nThe Parade of Sail is expected to pass Fort Monroe at approximately 10:13 a.m.\, offering one of the region’s most memorable vantage points as international tall ships and military vessels travel through Hampton Roads toward downtown Norfolk. Visitors are encouraged to arrive early\, allow extra time for traffic and parking\, and follow event signage throughout Fort Monroe. \nBarbara Hamm Lee\, Executive Producer and Host of WHRO Another View\, will emcee the parade and share details about the participating vessels\, Fort Monroe and Hampton revolutionary and Juneteenth history. The maritime procession will continue through noon and offers a once-in-a-generation viewing opportunity from one of the region’s most historic locations. \nFrom noon – 6 p.m.\, visitors will enjoy a vibrant Juneteenth celebration curated by AMC 250 featuring cultural displays\, exhibits\, local vendors\, food and community organizations.
