DESCRIPTION:This tour explores the pre-revolutionary history of Point Comfort and highlights its importance due to its proximity to the waterways. Participants will hear about Indigenous use of the land\, the first fortifications and role in colonial trade\, culminating in the stories of early freedom seekers. DESCRIPTION:The African Landing Memorial is a one-of-a-kind sculpture and site\, which is designated as a UNESCO Site of Memory on the Slave Route Project\, that commemorates a singular moment that reverberates through the fabric of more than 400 years of American history—the landing of the first Africans in Virginia in August 1619\, at Point Comfort. The memorial site and future art reflect the true narrative of the events leading to the creation of the institution of slavery in what later became the United States.
