Public Meeting: Review Exhibit Designs for Visitor and Education Center
The Fort Monroe Authority will hold a public meeting on March 14, 2019 to review the designs for the exhibits at the Fort Monroe Visitor and Education Center. The meeting will be held at 6:30 pm at the Fort Monroe Theatre, located at 41 Tidball Road.
The Fort Monroe Visitor and Education Center is a legacy project of the 2019 Commemoration, American Evolution and will feature exhibits pertaining to the Fort Monroe Arc of Freedom.
Incorporating a blend of traditional displays and interactives, the exhibits will tell the stories of Captain John Smith and the early colonists and their encounter with the Virginia Indians; the 1619 arrival of the first enslaved Africans; and the culmination of 242 years of slavery, as the first contrabands came to Fort Monroe seeking refuge and emancipation. The exhibits will also examine the 187-year US Army presence at the fort and explore the many luminaries associated with the legacies of “Freedom’s Fortress.”
The Center will also include a gift shop, information desk, archives, multipurpose space and other visitor amenities.
This meeting is open to the public.
