Dancing with Bears on the Appalachian Trail: Have you ever been hiking and wondered where the trail ends? If it’s on the East coast and the trail was marked with white paint on the trees, then you were likely hiking on part the Appalachian Trail, a 2,200-mile footpath traversing the Appalachian Mountains from Georgia to Maine. Come learn about long distance hiking from Chris Martin who hiked this entire trail in the summer and fall of 2017.
Archaeology at Fort Monroe: Fort Monroe Authority Archaeologist Sam Henderson will share stories and artifacts from archaeological digs at Fort Monroe and discuss what they reveal about Old Point Comfort’s past.
Historic Preservation at Fort Monroe:
Learn about recent preservation initiatives from the newest members of the Fort Monroe team. Through the Hands-on Preservation Experience (HOPE) program these young people have been learning preservation craft skills while rehabilitating some of Fort Monroe’s most historic structures under the mentorship of the National Park Service’s Historic Architecture Conservation & Engineering Center (HACE).
From Tragedy to Triumph; the Martha Ann Fields Story: Living history interpreter Valerie Davis takes on the persona of Martha Ann Fields who escaped slavery with her 8 children and arrived at Fort Monroe in 1862. Listen to Mrs. Field’s stories of plantation life, her harrowing escape from slavery, and the successes of her children after the Civil War. One of her sons, James Apostles Fields went on to become a lawyer and state delegate; his house still stands in Newport News.
