FLAG FLYING OVER FORT MONROE AGAIN

May 24, 2012 – After an absence of eight months, the American flag is flying once again from Fort Monroe’s main pole. In accordance with military protocol, the flag was lowered during an Army decommissioning ceremony in September 2011 and preserved at the fort’s Casemate Museum. But donations, together with the necessary military permission, have enabled a new 10-foot by 16-foot flag to be raised in its place. The May 24th ceremony was held exactly 151 years after the fort’s first American flag  was raised by Union soldiers in 1861.
