From Tragedy to Triumph; the Martha Ann Fields Story: Living history interpreter Valerie Davis takes on the persona of Martha Ann Fields who escaped slavery with her 8 children and arrived at Fort Monroe in 1862. Listen to Mrs. Field’s stories of plantation life, her harrowing escape from slavery, and the successes of her children after the Civil War. One of her sons, James Apostles Fields went on to become a lawyer and state delegate; his house still stands in Newport News.
